Julie is an award winning textile artist originally from the quiet shores of Lake Erie, now living and working in Toronto. A lover of the fibre arts since she was a child, she studied textiles at the Kootenay School of the Arts, a small and eclectic school in the mountains of southeastern British Columbia, where she learned about the wonders of boiled wool from a fellow student. Aside from hat-making, Julie is passionate about natural dyeing (with plants and bugs and barks and such). She teaches workshops in both natural dyeing and felting.
About the process:
Boiled wool is a process where an item is knit loose and large, then shrunk (felted) to create a new fabric – one that is seamless, durable and super duper warm. More simply put, it’s just like when you accidentally shrink your wool sweater in the washing machine, except that we do it on purpose. All of Sinden's products are handmade with care in Toronto by Julie and her fabulous team.
100% merino wool. Merino wool is incredibly soft and fine, and is suitable even for those who otherwise find wool itchy. Because they are felted, the fabric is lovely and thick and the hats are remarkably warm, yet wool is by nature breathable. The naturally occurring lanolin in the wool also means the fabric is water resistant, making them the perfect all weather hat.
