International Women's Day - March 8th

March 8th is International Women's Day. This is a day to celebrate women! It is also a day to recall the political achievements made by the women's movement and to consider ways in which more work can be done. For over 90 years, International Women's Day has been a day for women to gather together for inspiration and activation.

In support of Women's Day, Grassroots has designated March as Women's Month. We will be holding empowering workshops throughout March featuring: Nancy Bradshaw from the Environmental Health Clinic at Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Sciences Centre, Creative Cosmetic Queen Kate Opashinov, and The Red Tent Collective from York University. Grassroots will also be featuring our alternative menstrual products in our stores at a discounted price to encourage women to explore options outside of mainstream menstrual products. Celebrate Women's Month at Grassroots!

Every year, North American women spend about $2 billion on single-use, disposable menstrual pads and tampons. Most disposable pads and tampons are made with chlorine-bleached fibres that contain dioxins, a carcinogen that has also been linked to endometriosis. It is toxic to both our reproductive and immune systems. Luckily, there are alternatives! This interactive workshop will address the negative environmental and health effects of mainstream menstrual products and explore positive, proactive alternatives. Learn more about menstruation, the environment and your health at this fun and informative event!

The Red Tent Collective is a York University-based student group. During the recent university term they put together a series of workshops discussing topics around menstruation, women’s health issues, sexuality and sexual identity, and eco-feminism.

Upcoming Events

Seedy Saturdays
Saturday March 13. Gardeners, your attendance is welcome at Toronto’s Seedy Saturday at Scadding Court Community Centre, Dundas at Bathurst. "Seedy Saturday" is a remarkable phenomenon. At the heart of each Seedy Saturday is a community seed exchange. Seedy Saturday is sponsored by Seeds of Diversity, a non-profit group of gardeners and farmers whose goal is to keep the best heritage plants that generations of gardeners have treasured.

By attending the Seedy Saturday in your area, you can find help for your garden at the many workshops offered, swap your favourite seeds with other gardeners at the seed exchange table, and buy open-pollinated heritage seeds and plants that are not genetically engineered from local vendors. You may find activities for your children and enjoy lunch at many events.

Environmental Art at the Annex

Grassroots Environmental Products showcases environmental artwork by local artists. We are very excited about this opportunity to present our customers with some excellent creative works and to support local artists who are concerned about environmental issues. Anyone interested in displaying art at Grassroots should contact Kathy@GrassrootsStore.com for information.

Judith Rudoler will be our feature artist for Women’s month, an appropriate month for her work to be displayed. Judith’s specializes in handmade papermaking and has led workshops at Grassroots on this topic. Judith’s interest in the meticulous process and the craft of making paper links inspired her interest in quilt making and quilt designs. Judith uses her art to express her feminist ideas. Her images provoke ideas about women’s work and family. Judith uses scraps of cloth to make recycled paper which ties in the themes of reuse, recycling, and reduction that are part of the heritage of domestic work and home economy. Her work plays with the linkages between leisure art and domestic craft, and explores the use of colour and notions of value.

Judith has completed the Arts program at OCAD printmaking with a focus in papermaking and bookbinding. She began papermaking about four years ago and it continues to be her primary medium. She is now continuing studies at OCAD. You can contact her at decklededge@rogers.com.
