Grassroots receives 2009 Retail Council of Canada Ambassador Award
We don't like to toot our horn too often, but sometimes it's nice to pass along great news. On Monday, June 1st, 2009, Grassroots' Owner Rob Grand accepted the Retail Council of Canada's Ambassador Award at the Excellence in Retail Awards Dinner, which recognizes the outstanding contributions of a local independent retailer to his or her community.
The recipient is seen as a visionary, an innovator, and an integral part of the community that his or her business serves. Recipients are known for their community involvement, customer loyalty, and support of locally made products and services. As the name of the award suggests, this individual or business must embody the true spirit of entrepreneurship and community service required to be recognized as an ambassador of the retail industry.

Grassroots Sponsors The Naked Ape Party
On Sunday, January 13th, 2008, Grassroots sponsored a successful fundraiser to benefit the David Suzuki Foundation (DSF). About 300 people turned up at the Toronto Botanical Gardens for The Naked Ape Party, hosted by Ted Grand (brother of Grassroots owner Rob Grand) and his partner, singer Tara MacLean. The event was hosted by CBC personality Jian Ghomeshi. In addition to a keynote address by Suzuki, there was entertainment by MacLean, Catherine MacLellan and Chris Murphy of Sloan. Guests, including singer Kim Stockwood and actress Teresa Pavlinek, snacked on organic hors d'oeuvres and were able to bid on items in the silent auction. In addition to sponsoring the event, Grassroots' staff showed their support by volunteering in various capacities. The party raised $20,000, with 100% of the silent auction proceeds going to the DSF and $5 from the sale of every ticket going to benefit the New Leaf Yoga Foundation, which makes yoga and meditation accessible to disadvantaged youths in Canada.

Grassroots Continues to Lighten its Footprint
Grassroots blazes a new trail by being an early adopter of LED technology at its Toronto-Annex retail location. As part of a pilot project with greenTbiz, Grassroots replaced all the energy-intensive halogen bulbs in its flagship store, thus becoming one of the first retailers in Toronto to use the eco-friendly 'technology of the future'.This initiative demonstrates the ecological superiority of LED technology - it's more efficient, completely mercury free and longer lasting. Grassroots expects to lower energy costs by 1.5 kilowatts - or 75% - annually. Manufactured by TuroLight, the LED lights (MR16) are 7 watts each, replacing the 50-watt halogens. Grassroots is no stranger to alternative power sources. Both its Toronto-based stores are Bullfrogpowered with 100% green electricity and a solar panel powers the window lights at the Riverdale location.
