The use of pheromones to achieve biological pest management is an ingenious alternative to using harsh chemicals and a great way to reduce pesticides.

So how does it work? Insects of the same species can communicate with one another by releasing small quantities of chemical substances from their bodies into the air. These distinct 'scents', which are called pheromones, will attract others to the source of that attraction. Thanks to years of research, it is now possible to communicate with certain insects by using these synthesized pheromones, enabling us to attract them, or disrupt them from their normal behaviour.

Moth traps available for the Indian Meal Moth or Webbing Clothes Moth. Traps are tent-like houses that are glue-coated. For indoor or outdoor use.

Indian Meal Moth
General Identification: Although originally a native of Europe, this insect now has world wide distribution and is considered one of the most troublesome of the storage product moths. With a wingspan of 18 mm or thereabouts, the adult moth is grayish in colour, and has distinctive bronze-red tips on the fore-wings. It feeds on a wide range of food stuffs, including cereals, nuts, dried milk and dried fruits, and consequently is found in many manufacturing premises and warehouses handling these products, as well as in homes. The larvae, which cause the damage, grow to 12 mm in length and at full maturity are a pinkish white colour, with a brown head. They form silky white webs in the food stuffs in which they are feeding, causing extensive spoilage. Since the life cycle is completed in 4 - 6 weeks, several generations may occur each year.

Webbing Clothes Moth
General Identification: Despite being a relatively small moth ( less than 5mm in length ), the larvae of this insect can cause considerable damage when they feed on articles that contain wool, mohair, fur, hair, feathers or other products of animal origin. The distribution of this insect is worldwide and their impact is particularly serious in homes, carpet warehouses and museums, where priceless articles are often destroyed.

The moth is straw coloured, without any distinctive markings on the wings, and the larvae are usually white, with brown heads, forming webs or tubes on the surface where they are feeding.

The female lays 100 - 300 white eggs on the surface of the fabric which will hatch into larvae in approximately 5 days. The period of larval development is usually 6 weeks, during which time the larvae actively feed on the fabric. However, this development time is dependent on temperature and humidity, and can take considerably longer under cooler conditions.
